THEN Jesus took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man shall be accomplished.
In these words, Christ turns decisively to Jerusalem. Christ tells his disciples, that at Jerusalem he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: and they shall scourge him, and put him to death;
But this destination is not a defeat, it is a fulfillment, a completion: and the third day he shall rise again. He will triumph over death – death will be swallowed up in life. The 12 disciples picture to us the Church in miniature, the Church that has not yet been brought to birth.
