Lent 5: Passion Sunday 2012
Today our worship and readings begin to focus more directly on the coming Passion of Christ. The change in our vestments from the purple of Lenten penitence to the sombre Red of Passiontide displays in colour this change in attention. At the beginning of the week before Palm Sunday, our Lord spoke more openly than he ever had about his Passion, so this Sunday is Passion Sunday. The opening hymn for today, “The Royal Banners Forward Go”, is one of the oldest Christian hymns, and it is a special one for beginning of Passiontide. It was first sung on Nov. 19, 569. When you consider how quickly much of our most popular music comes and goes, this must be worthy of note: 569 to 2012 and going strong.
