This morning we celebrate the Feast of St Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist. Matthew is one of the twelve apostles and author of the first book of the New Testament. By tradition he evangelized as far east as Persia and suffered a martyr’s death; so we wear red on his Feast Day. Matthew was a publican, a tax collector, and so was despised by his countrymen for extorting money from fellow Israelites on behalf of the Roman Empire. This morning we have heard the account of his calling: AND as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me…
