St Mary of Egypt was one of the most revered saints of the early medieval Church. In the eastern Christian tradition, the Fifth Sunday in Lent is dedicated to her life and example. Consumed by carnal addictions as a young woman, St Mary eventually journeyed to Jerusalem with a band of pilgrims and underwent a profound conversion. Afterwards, she moved into the desert as part of a massive exodus from the cities of the ancient world into desert monasteries and hermitages. She lived there for close to fifty years, before meeting Father Zosimas and recounting the extraordinary story of her life. Together we will read her biography and discuss the ‘beauty of holiness’. We will also have occasion to consider from time to time ikons of St Mary, the liturgical texts devoted to her Feast Day, and the contemporary opera by Sir John Taverner, St Mary of Egypt.
*Please note that there is no study session on March 25. Holy Communion for the Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated this day at 6pm. Preacher: Father Gary Thorne
