Genius Child: Portia White at Town Hall

This year marks 75 years since celebrated Nova Scotian contralto Portia White made her NYC debut at Town Hall in 1944 – it was only after her massive success with this concert that White was permitted to sing in many previously race-restricted concert halls back home. This special presentation recreates White’s historic NYC concert featuring works by Thomas André Campra, Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, and Florence B. Price, as well as spirituals and text by African American poet Langston Hughes. The Grammy Award-winning soprano Harolyn Blackwell is accompanied by prize-winning pianist Daniel Zelibor. Presented in partnership with the Nova Scotia Talent Trust with assistance from the Halifax Ladies’ Musical Club, the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, and Arts Nova Scotia.
