Candlemas 2019

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple. (1304-1306.) Giotto (1266-1337). Fresco

The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, also known as the Purification of Saint Mary the Virgin, and often called Candlemas, will be observed with a service of Choral Holy Communion with full choir on Friday, February 1st, the Eve of the Feast Day, at 7 pm. The service will feature a candlelight procession in which all who are present will take part. As we hear in the Gospel reading appointed for the day (on page 267 of the Book of Common Prayer; Luke 2:22-40) the ancient Simeon greeted the arrival of the Infant Jesus with the words: “Lord, now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace” (Luke 2:29). Simeon recognized the Christ Child as his Saviour and carried Jesus, the Light of the world, in his arms, and so we too will carry our lighted candles as a sign of that Light that came into the world. During this service, all the candles for the next year will be blessed. The music of the service will include Messa à quattro voci da capella by Claudio Monteverdi as the mass setting and will feature Orlando di Lasso’s Nunc dimittis super “Susanne un jour” as well as Senex puerum portabat by Tomas Luis de Victoria. The Voluntary will be Dietrich Buxtehude’s Magnificat primi toni.  Father Hatt will be our preacher.
