On Wednesday, January 11, 1995, Bishop Arthur Peters granted formal permission for the restoration of the Round Church after the devastating fire the previous June, which destroyed approximately 1/3 of the building. While his decision was a moment of tremendous joy for the congregation, a solemn obligation had been placed upon the Parish, which continues to this day. We will mark this important moment in the life of our Parish with the following events:
Friday, January 10th at 7 pm
Video Viewing in the Church Hall
The video includes original footage of the fire with local news coverage at the time, the removable of valuables from the church the next day, the first Sunday Service of Holy Communion following the fire, and the visit of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh during the rebuilding.
Saturday, January 11th at 5 pm
Choral Evensong followed by Reflections
Our Guest preacher will be The Rev’d Dr George Westhaver, former Rector and now Principal of Pusey House, Oxford, England. Fr Westhaver was Lay Evangelist at St George’s at the time of the fire. This will be followed by a reception and a presentation of the original document which outlined the reasons for rebuilding the Round Church; and various parishioners will present their own recollections of the fire and the rebuilding. Archbishop Ron Cutler will also be in attendance at this service.
