Every Saturday of the year for over two and a half decades the St George’s Soup Kitchen on Maitland St in North End Halifax has opened its doors to feed about 150 people per week. Some of you will remember that in March of 2015 we lost a huge provider of food support to the St George’s Soup Kitchen when Feed NS closed down the Learning Kitchen (for a little more detail about that, see this post from January 2015).
Key volunteer Michelle Gabriel dressed up as Santa Clause to hand out gifts to the Soup Kitchen clients at our annual Christmas Party.Last year we put out a call to the churches, orgs, and groups of friends that already help us through so much of the year, and they rose to the challenge incredibly kindly. We have only a few more Saturdays in 2016 when we still need food support. Those Saturdays are listed below.
If you know of a business, group of friends, social club, religious organization, or even just one very large-hearted person who’d like to help us cover one or more of these days either financially or through providing food, please get in touch with Elisabeth Stones at email@example.com or 902-423-1059.
We have recipe suggestions (casseroles are a staple, but it can be anything from hamburgers to sliced roasts!), and we can discuss providing kitchen space if that is helpful. Note also that we can offer tax receipts for monetary donations, or for in-kind donations (with purchase receipts) if you are buying food to make a meal.
Dates we need food for the rest of 2016: (list edited June 23, 2016)
While we would welcome any group of volunteers that wants to come on the day and serve the food as well, food can be dropped off ahead of time, too, so don’t let a busy Saturday schedule hold you back!
