Bible Text: Psalm 76:5 |

Of all the Seven Deadly Sins, Sloth appears at first glance to be the odd one out.   Like the animal that bears its name, it seems somehow to hang the wrong way upon our tree.

Rest is a necessity of life.  Indeed, after toiling for six days to create the world, God took the seventh day off.  We are later commanded that “the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work”  (Exod.  20 : 10).  Perhaps what is important then is the other part of the Fourth Commandment; the first bit, that tells us “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work” (Exod.  20 : 9) – it is implied that our rest on the Sabbath comes once we have done “all our work”.  This rest is our reward, and for us to take it out of turn or undeserved is to commit the deadly sin of sloth....
