THE COLLECT.

O GOD, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil, and make us the sons of God, and heirs of eternal life: Grant us, we beseech thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves, even as he is pure; that, when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Advent Study Groups for 2013

November 16, 2013 at 3:36 pm

Sunday mornings – 9:30am in the Sunday School Room

Beginning on the Sunday Next Before Advent, November 24th, and running each Sunday until Advent IV, December 22nd, Nicholas Hatt and Benjamin Lee are conducting brief sessions based on a series of Advent Meditations that were originally given by Dr. Robert Crouse.  This series follows the Prayer Book readings for the Sundays in Advent and helps to unfold the development of these lessons week by week.

Wednesday evenings – 5:30pm Evensong, supper, and talk

If you are able to assist by bringing food to share, please let Susan Harris know at susan.susanharris@gmail.com or speak with her after church.  We serve only cold food, so no one has to hover over a hot pot instead of attending Evening Prayer, or attend to cleanup whilst the rest of us are attending the sessions.

Wednesday, December 4th – a session led by Father Purchase: The article in the Apostles’ Creed – “From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead” expresses two beliefs: the Second Coming of Christ, and the belief that He is coming in judgement. For the early Church, the Second Coming and the fact of Judgement were integral parts of their proclamation.  On Dec. 4th, we will look at these two beliefs and also ask ourselves “On what can I expect to be judged?

Wednesday, December 11tha session led by Garth MacPhee:  Amidst the noise and clamour of commercial Christmas, Advent music speaks of lamentation, deep longing, penitence and holy mystery. This session will focus on the liturgical music of the season: The ‘O Antiphons’; The Advent Prose ‘Rorate coeli’; and plainsong hymns such as ‘Creator of the starry height’ and ‘O Come, O Come, Emmanuel’.   Please come, ready to sing as well as reflect on this beautiful music.

Wednesday, December 18th – a session led by Sue Zinck:  This session will be based on a video of Advent Reflections by The Most Reverend Rowan Williams.  Rowan Williams was Archbishop of Canterbury from December 2002 to December 2012. He is a theologian and poet, as well as a bishop of the Church. He spent much of his earlier career as an academic at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford successively. After stepping down as Archbishop of Canterbury, he took up the position of Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.  Following Evening Prayer and Supper, we will watch the video and a discussion will follow.

Space is limited, so kindly contact Tracy vom Hagen as soon as possible, if you are interested (tracydemmons@gmail.com). Day visitors to the retreat are also most welcome. We hope to ride share as much as possible, so please indicate if you can offer a seat or require transport.
